Not quite as good as Trainspotting...but close

Skagboys - Irvine Welsh

I just wrote a huge review, but it somehow deleted itself, so this won't be too long as I'm feeling a bit pissed!

Reading a novel by Irvine Welsh-specifically one which concerns these character's- always makes for a fun reading experience for me, so I didn't want to finish this one.

This novel charts the period when heroine took over most of these characters lives, so with that in mind, this would then be a prequel.

I know that Irvine Welsh is riding the crest of the proverbial wave writing about these characters and I understand the standpoint voiced by many when they wonder how long he can carry on using them. I however feel that until his writing of these characters lacks the creativity or gritty edge that I've come to love, don't really see the point. I'm not being biased here. I absolutely hated Filth (told from another view-point), so understand he has a hard time transcending this quality to a different narrative point-of-view.

I have a friend who says she loves Skagboys more than Trainspotting and I can completely see her point. Trainspotting was in essence a collection of short stories, whereas Skagboys has a definite structure and arc. It is easy then to find yourself more involved. Essentially you are reading of events that have more of a flow and subsequently feel more involved. I myself still rate Trainspotting a little bit more simply because it was a new concept and had a freshness to it.

I'm planning on reading Glue shortly, so if anyone's read it, please tell me what you thought. As I said, I've had some difficulty with Irvine Welsh books other than those that chart the lives of these people, so I'm not sure how I'll fair. Thanks.
